Most major plumbing emergencies don't appear out of nowhere.
More often than not, they begin as small annoyances that are easy to put in the "I'll get around to it eventually" basket. A dripping tap, slow drain, or a bit of water where there shouldn't be any might not seem particularly urgent, especially when everything is still technically working.
But after years of working in homes throughout Wellington and the Hutt Valley, we've seen how quickly minor problems can turn into major headaches when left unchecked.
The good news is that many costly repairs can be avoided by paying attention to the warning signs early.
After years on the tools, we've found there are a handful of small issues that consistently turn into bigger repairs when left unchecked.
1. Dripping taps
Everyone has a tap somewhere in the house that's "always dripped like that".
And while replacing a washer is often a straightforward fix, persistent dripping isn't always just about the tap itself.
Over time, worn cartridges, failing seals, corrosion, or excessive water pressure can all contribute to ongoing leaks. We've seen cases where homeowners have become so accustomed to the noise that they don't think much of it, only to discover that the constant moisture has damaged cabinetry or that high water pressure is contributing to wear throughout the house.
A slow drip may not seem significant, but left alone for long enough it can waste thousands of litres of water every year and shorten the life of fixtures throughout the home.
2. Slow drains (especially when they’re getting slower)
Water that takes a little longer to disappear down the sink or shower is often one of the first signs that something is building up inside your pipes.
Hair, soap residue, grease, food scraps, and outdoor debris can gradually restrict the flow of water. Sometimes the cause is more serious, with tree roots or damaged pipework creating problems underground.
Many blocked drains develop over months, with plenty of warning signs along the way.
Addressing the issue early is generally far easier than dealing with a completely blocked drain and the mess that can come with it.
3. A toilet that won’t stop running
A constantly running toilet can be surprisingly easy to overlook.
Because the water is flowing quietly into the cistern, many homeowners don't realise how much water is being wasted until the next bill arrives. Often the culprit is a worn valve or internal fitting that can be repaired relatively easily.
Left long enough, however, the problem can waste thousands of litres of water and put unnecessary strain on the system.
4. Small leaks beneath sinks and vanities
Water doesn't need much space to create problems.
A tiny leak beneath a kitchen sink or vanity can go unnoticed for a surprisingly long time. By the time visible damage appears, moisture may already have affected particleboard cabinetry, insulation, flooring, or surrounding timber.
What starts as a loose connection or ageing seal can eventually become a much bigger repair involving builders, cabinetmakers, or flooring replacement.
It's often the smell that alerts people first. Musty odours, swollen cupboard bases, mould growth, or staining are all signs that moisture has been present for longer than you might think.
5. Changes in your hot water
Many hot water cylinder failures don't happen without warning.
Perhaps the water isn't quite as hot as it used to be. Maybe you're running out of hot water faster than normal, or you've started noticing unusual noises coming from the cylinder.
These changes are often signs that components are wearing out or that the system is working harder than it should.
Addressing the issue early may allow repairs to be made before you're faced with the inconvenience of having no hot water at all.
Why small problems become big ones
Plumbing systems are interconnected. A minor issue in one area can create bigger problems elsewhere if it's left unresolved. Moisture leads to mould, timber damage, and deterioration, blockages become complete stoppages, and ageing components eventually reach their breaking point.
And unfortunately, plumbing emergencies rarely happen at convenient times.
Knowing when to call
If you've noticed something that's been bothering you for a while, there's a good chance your home is already telling you that something needs attention.
That doesn't necessarily mean a major repair is required. In many cases, catching problems early means they can be resolved quickly and with far less disruption.
