Is your Wellington water safe to drink?

Fresh. Clean. Straight from the tap.

That's what most of us assume when we fill a glass of water at home. And for the most part, Wellington's water supply is treated and monitored - but that doesn't mean what arrives at your tap is as clean as you might think.

Wellington's water infrastructure is ageing. Pipes that were laid decades ago are still doing the heavy lifting beneath our streets, and the pressure events, leaks, and contamination risks that come with an older network are well-documented.

In 2019, Wellingtonians got a firsthand reminder of just how vulnerable the system can be when boil water notices swept across the region following storm damage and sediment issues. When the infrastructure fails - and the past few months have shown us all what that looks like - it's a reminder that what comes out of your tap is only as reliable as the system behind it.

The reality is, by the time water travels from treatment plant to your kitchen tap, it's passed through kilometres of ageing infrastructure. And what picks up along the way doesn't always show up in the taste or colour.

Why Wellington's water might not be as clean as you think

Wellington Water does a solid job of treating and testing the supply - but there are limits to what any centralised treatment system can control once water leaves the plant and enters the distribution network.

Here's what can affect the water coming out of your tap:

  • Ageing pipes: Many of the pipes running through older suburbs - from Petone to Johnsonville, Lower Hutt to Eastbourne - are decades old. Old pipes can leach metals, harbour bacterial biofilm, and introduce sediment into your water long after it's been treated.

  • Chlorine and chloramines: These are added to keep water safe during distribution. While this is a necessary protectant, many people are sensitive to the taste and smell, and there's growing interest in what long-term exposure to disinfection byproducts might mean for health.

  • Sediment and particulates: Following heavy rain or pressure events - both of which Wellington is no stranger to - sediment and fine particles can make their way into the supply. Most won't make you sick, but they're not something you'd choose to drink.

  • What you can't see: Microplastics, trace pharmaceuticals, and other emerging contaminants are increasingly being detected in water supplies around the world. New Zealand's testing standards don't yet require monitoring for many of these substances.

So what's the solution?

A quality water filter system installed at your home gives you control over what you're drinking, cooking with, and giving to your family - regardless of what's happening in the wider network.

And not all water filters are created equal. That's where Puretec comes in.

Puretec has been New Zealand and Australia's leading water filtration specialist since 1989. Their systems are designed and tested to handle real-world water quality issues - which makes them particularly well-suited to a region like Wellington, where the water supply can be unpredictable.

As Puretec agents for the Wellington region, we supply and install the full range of their water filtration systems, and we can help you find the right fit for your home.

What a water filter actually does for you

A good filtration system does more than just improve the taste of your water. Here's what you can expect:

  • Removes sediment and particulates: A quality whole-home filter catches the fine particles that make water look cloudy or leave residue on your appliances and fixtures.

  • Reduces chlorine and chemical tastes: Activated carbon filtration removes the chemical taste and odour from treated mains water, leaving it tasting clean and neutral - the way water should taste.

  • Protects against bacteria and contaminants: Higher-spec systems provide an additional layer of protection against microbial contaminants - important peace of mind in a region where boil water notices aren't unheard of.

  • Extends the life of your appliances: Filtered water is gentler on hot water cylinders, dishwashers, and washing machines. Sediment and mineral buildup are among the most common causes of premature appliance failure.

  • Better for your skin and hair: If you've ever noticed your skin feeling dry or your hair a bit flat, your water quality could be a contributing factor. Filtered water is noticeably kinder.

Is this the right time to install one?

If you're already planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation, the answer is almost certainly yes.

When your plumber is already on-site and the walls are already open, adding a water filtration system is far simpler and more cost-effective than doing it as a standalone job later. It's the same logic as upgrading your hot water cylinder during a renovation - if the timing lines up, it makes good sense.

But you don't need to be mid-renovation to make the switch. Puretec systems can be installed under the sink, inline on the mains supply, or as a whole-home solution depending on your needs and your budget.

What are the options?

Puretec offers a range of systems to suit different homes and different budgets:

  • Under-bench filters: Compact and tidy, these sit beneath the kitchen sink and filter water at the point of use. Ideal if you want great-tasting drinking and cooking water without a full whole-home system.

  • Whole-home filtration: Installed on the incoming mains supply, these systems filter every tap in the house - your showers, your laundry, your hot water cylinder, all of it. The best choice if you want comprehensive protection throughout your home.

  • UV purification systems: For an added layer of protection against bacteria and viruses, UV systems work alongside filtration to give you the highest level of water quality available for residential use.

We can walk you through the options and help you choose a system that suits your home, your household size, and your budget.

Don't just take clean water for granted

Wellington's water is generally safe - but "generally safe" and "as clean as it could be" aren't the same thing. With ageing infrastructure, the occasional boil water notice, and the invisible contaminants that no centralised system can fully control, there's a strong case for taking water quality into your own hands.

A Puretec filtration system gives you that control. Better tasting, cleaner water - from every tap in your home.

As Wellington's local Puretec agents, we can supply, install, and service the right system for your home - and if you're already planning a renovation, we'll make sure it's done at the right time to save you cost and disruption.
