If you noticed fewer Jason Brown Plumbing vans on the roads around Wellington and the Hutt Valley last month, don’t worry - we haven’t hung up our tools.
Actually, our team packed our bags and headed up to Hamilton for the annual New Zealand Plumbing Conference.
For us, this isn't just an excuse to network or take a quick break from the winter cold. It’s an opportunity to learn, connect, and make sure we’re bringing the very best knowledge back to the homes we work in every day.
This year’s event is a historic one, too. It marks the 125th anniversary of Master Plumbers New Zealand.
More Than Just Pipes and Fittings
Most people probably assume plumbing doesn’t change all that much.
Water still runs downhill, hot water still comes out of the tap, and blocked drains are still blocked drains.
But behind the scenes, our industry is constantly evolving, as building regulations change, new products come onto the market, water efficiency standards improve, and heating systems become more sophisticated.
Keeping up with those changes is part of delivering quality workmanship.
That’s why events like the annual Master Plumbers Conference matter.
What We’re Keeping an Eye On
Every year, the conference gives us a chance to see where the industry is heading and learn from manufacturers, suppliers, regulators, and other experienced plumbers from around New Zealand.
Some of the topics attracting plenty of attention this year included:
Lead-free plumbing products
New Zealand has now transitioned to compulsory lead-free plumbing products for drinking water systems. As manufacturers release new components and technologies, it’s important to understand how these products perform in the real world and ensure every installation meets the latest standards.
Upcoming self-certification changes
With the Government progressing the Self-Certification by Plumbers and Drainlayers Bill, there has been plenty of discussion around what the new framework could mean for homeowners and the industry. Staying up to date with these changes helps ensure we’re ready for the future and able to guide customers through any new requirements.
High-efficiency hot water systems
With energy prices remaining front of mind for many households, more homeowners are asking about alternatives to traditional hot water systems. Heat pump hot water technology and energy-efficient upgrades continue to evolve, and understanding the latest options allows us to provide practical advice based on your home's needs.
Celebrating 125 Years of Master Plumbers
While much of the conference focuses on the future, this year has also been a chance to reflect on the past.
Master Plumbers New Zealand is celebrating 125 years of supporting the industry - a milestone that speaks to generations of tradespeople committed to raising standards and protecting consumers.
That's one of the reasons we're proud to be part of Master Plumbers.
Being part of the organisation connects us with a wider network of experienced plumbers, suppliers, manufacturers, and industry leaders who are all committed to continually improving the profession. It also means staying connected to the latest thinking, learning from others in the trade, and ensuring we're delivering the best possible outcomes for our customers here in Wellington and the Hutt Valley.
And while the tools, technology, and regulations have changed enormously over the last century, the fundamentals haven't.
Homeowners still want tradespeople they can trust, honest advice, quality workmanship, and confidence that the work being carried out in their home is safe, reliable, and built to last.
Those are values that have helped shape the profession over the last 125 years, and they're values we're proud to bring to every job we do today.
Why It Matters for Your Home
You’ll probably never see the hours spent attending conferences, undertaking training, or keeping up with industry changes.
But that investment shows up every day.
It shows up in better advice when you're deciding whether to repair or replace a hot water cylinder, in understanding the latest regulations and technologies, in recommending products that will stand the test of time, and in the confidence that comes from knowing your plumber isn't relying solely on what they learned years ago, but is continually investing in doing things better.
Bringing the Best Home to Wellington
One of the things we love most about this trade is that there’s always something new to learn.
No matter how many years you've been on the tools, there’s always a better way to solve a problem, a new technology to understand, or another lesson to bring back to the next job.
We're incredibly proud to stand behind the Master Plumbers banner as the organisation celebrates 125 years of service to Kiwi homeowners.
And while we've enjoyed celebrating this milestone with the wider industry, we're even more excited to bring fresh ideas, new knowledge, and the same commitment we've always had back home to the homes and families we serve throughout Wellington and the Hutt Valley.
